From February 27 to March 15, 2009, for the 5th edition of "Zoom arriere ", the cinmatheque of Toulouse (France), together with Russia's Gosfilmfond, will be hosting a wide-ranging retrospective of films on Jewish themes (films whose subject matter, story, characters can be identified by the target viewer as being Jewish) produced between the 1910s and the 1960s, in the geographic area corresponding to the Russian, and later Soviet Empire (not including Poland). A scientific colloquium will be organized in conjunction with this event with a view to providing a historical perspective on this production. The aim of the colloquium is to explore the reasons for the recurrence of this theme, its political significance, and establish links between different periods in the history of Jews in Russia and the Soviet Union and their representations in film. The colloquium also hopes to shed light on different perceptions of Jewish identity, and how these are reflected in films depending on local context and film directors.Vollständigen Artikel lesen:
1917 marked a turning point for the perception of the "Jewish question" and the definition of Jewishness in Russia. Before 1917, the Jews living in the Russian Empire were discriminated against in many areas, but the fact that they were able to preserve some autonomy, and that they were regrouped in communities, promoted the development of Jewish culture, religion, thought, and political activity. Thanks to the emancipation, Jews gained legal rights and became normal citizens, but the Soviet authorities' policies concerning the Jews were always double-edged: while they recognized the existence of the Jewish people, they also planned their complete assimilation.

"The law of England acts upon general and extensive principles: it gives liberty, rightly understood, that is, protection, to a Jew, a Turk, or a Heathen, as well as to those who profess the true religion of Christ; and it will not dissolve a civil obligation between master and servant, on account of the alteration of [religious] faith in either of the parties: but the slave is entitled to the same protection in England before, as after, baptism; and, whatever service the heathen negro owed of right to his American master, by general not by local law, the same (whatever it be) is he bound to render when brought to England and made a Christian." "My rev. brother" (the bishop of London) "told your lordships, that perpetual slavery was not permitted by the Jewish law.
That a native Jew could be held in slavery for seven years only, at the longest.
For he had a right to his freedom upon the first return of the sabbatical year.
And that a foreign slave purchased in the market, or captivated in [authorized-by-God] war, could be held in slavery for fifty years only, at the longest. For the foreign slave had a right to his freedom upon the first return of the year of Jubilee.
And from these premises, my rev. brother concluded, that perpetual slavery was unknown among the Jews."But, my lords, I must tell the noble earl, and I must tell your lordships, that the noble earl has no understanding at all of the technical terms of the Jewish law. In all the laws relating to the transfer of property, the words 'for ever' signify only 'to the next jubilee.' That is the longest 'for ever' which the Jewish law knows with respect to property.
